F. Co Spotlight: Redwing
Redwing Heritage is the most recognizable brand that we carry at Felding Co., and deservedly so. The company has been around since 1905 when Charles Beckman formed the Red Wing Shoe Company in Minnesota and produced the brand’s original work boot. The company grew and began to offer more products, garnering a loyal following and attracting artists like Norman Rockwell to create ads for the company.
Redwing’s commitment to classic styles that are built to last has cemented their place as one of the premier shoemakers not only in America but also worldwide. The shoemaking process, which has undergone only minor changes since the company’s origin, entails a five-part process that epitomizes what an American-made product should be.
First, leather is carefully selected and cut for each shoe. The leather pieces are then sewn together to form the shoe’s upper portion by Redwing’s expert sewing machine operators on Puritan sewing machines that have been used since 1905. The lasting process is the next stop where the upper is pulled over the shoe to solidify its shape. Using the Goodyear welt construction process that has been around since 1869, the leather welt is sewn with the upper and the leather insole. The sole is then either stitched or glued to the midsole. Finally, each shoe is inspected twice to determine that they meet Redwing’s high expectations for quality.
The Iron Ranger and 875 Classic Moc boots are arguably Redwing Heritage’s, most popular styles, and personal favorites of ours here at Felding Co. Redwing Heritage is Redwing Shoes historic line of past and present models all made in Minnesota.
When iron miners on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range needed tough, comfortable boots that could withstand a beating, Redwing created the boots that now bear the Iron Ranger name. These boots have Copper Rough & Tough leather, chrome hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, and a Vibram 430 Mini-lug sole. While you may not be wearing them to work in an iron mine, these boots will withstand whatever you put them through all while keeping you comfortable and looking your best.
The 875 Classic Moc was originally designed for use by sportsmen who needed a comfortable boot that could withstand a variety of different terrains. Because of their comfort and how easy they were to wear for long hours, farmers and factory workers quickly adopted the Classic Moc boot. The boot’s crescent-shaped toe design was modeled after the moccasins that the North American Algonquin Indians wore. With their unique, casual style, these boots are one of Felding Co. owner Luke Lanzoni’s favorite items.
Felding Co. will be offering a whiskey tasting and hosting a Redwing representative on October 17 from 5:30-7:00 to showcase most of Redwing’s Heritage line and provide more detail about what makes these boots a worthwhile investment. If anything catches your attention, and don’t be surprised if it does, we will be taking special orders for styles that we do not currently carry.
